On foot

For shorter distances, nothing beats exploring New York on foot. It is as an example very easy to find ones way walking while in Manhattan where the logic grid s½stem makes it a breeze to find what you are looking for. There are 20 blocks for each mile on the avenues and you should be able to walk atleast one block a minute. Also, why not do like thousands of resident New Yorkers and start the day with a nice jog? Sidewalks are everywhere tourist normally go and it is easy to walk along the streets on these wide paved sidewalks.

Bus and subway

If you want to use the iconic New York subway system you need to purchase a MetroCard. Metrocards work on the bus as well but it is possible to pay cash on the bus as well proivded you have even change. Metrocards can be boght at veding machines at the stations and is issued by the NY Transit Authority. It is also possible to buy the card online, as well as in many newsstands and grocery stores. By taxi

The traditional yellow New York taxis are famous world wide and few visitors come to New York without trying them at least once. You should only use licensed cabs which can be identified on their special license plates, tax number on the roof, ametal seal on the hood and stickers on the windshield, licensed taxis also have a divider and a meter.

There are also black car, or car service, this are taxis that you call by phone unlike the yollow ones you flag down on the street. In these taxis it is customary to pay a flat fee instead of using a meter so always negotiate the price in advance. You will know this cab by the text “livery” or TLC” on the bottom of the license plates.

Get a Driver

An alternative to simply hailing a cab off the street is to retain the services of a transport company offering something a little bit more fanciful, such as a modern stretch hummer limousine or classy Lincoln Continental limousine. Exploring New York with your own driver on stand by for a few hours can be surprisingly inexpensive.

Rent a Car

New York got, as you might expect, a high number of car renta companues and most have cars fitted with GPS devices making it easy for you to find you way to wherever you want to go even if you never been in NYC before. This is a good option if you want to explore that state of new york as well as the city, ie. taking a weekend off at some nice little B&B in the countryside. You should remember that driving in the city can be hectic and stressing. Previous driving experience from high-paced multimillion cities is recommended.
