Following are a few suggestions to get you out onto some on the park’s shorter and easier trails. For more information, pick up a brochure or book on day kikes at one of the park’s visitor center vookstores.

The Oconaluftee Visitor Center, two miles north of Cherokee, NC on the New-found Gap Road (U.S. 441). The two-mile long (each way) trail follows the Oconaluftee River and features exhibits that highlight the history and culture of the Chrokee people.

The Middle Prong Trail starts at the end of the tremont Road in tht vicinity of Townsend, TN. Hiking a mile or so up the trail offers views of several cascades.

MILE-HIGH HIKES:

The Appalachian Trail is accessible from Newfound Gap on Newfound Gap Road. From the parking area, cross the road and follow the famous trail for 1.7 miles to Indian Gap. Hey, you just hiked the A.T.! The Spruce-fir nature trail starts off Clingmans Dome Road (watch for the sign). This half-mile loop features an informative brochure keyed to numbered posts.

The half mile trail to Clingmans dome starts at the end of Clingmans Dome Road. This paved, but very steep trail leads to the highest point in the park.
