The Best festival in Wales

Uncategorized

To an Englishman it is another of those baffling long words that mean little or nothing. To those who know – the Welsh people – ‘Eisteddfod’ is part of the nation’s cultural identity. The word is ‘Eisteddfod’ is derived from the Welsh word ‘Eistedd’, which means ‘to sit’- setting the scene perfectly for a festival of this nature.

The National Eisteddfod of Wales is a major international festival, allowing visitors be part of a large gathering celebrating the country’s rich culture. The festival, originally dating back to the twelfth century, is considered by many to be one of the best things to do in the country. It is very important for Wales as a nation, because of its promotion of the language and the arts.

I wanted to know first hand what all the noise was about, so I decided that I would start looking for holidays in Wales, to gain first-hand experience. Because the festival starts in August, it enables you to plan where you would like to stay well in advance. There are many opportunities to attend the festival whilst renting one of the many delightful holiday cottages in Wales. You could time it perfectly to coincide with some of the shortbreaks on offer from ‘Wales in Style’ and their selection of shortbreaks in wales.

I had been informed that the festival had been the starting point for a number of famous artists on their way to the top. Maybe the most famous past winner of the festival prize is Bryn Terfel the international baritone.

What is impressive about the whole event is the large variety of performances on offer, along with the different ceromonies, competitions and periferal concerts. The festival doesn’t just concentrate upon traditional forms of music, but celebrates styles from around the world including hip-hop and jive. It may surprise you to discover that the show is dependent on a large number of voluteers. If you wish to put yourself forward as a volunteer, you can ring this number (0845) 122 2003.
